Zumba Wii: A Review

For my birthday in August, D got me as one of my gifts Zumba Fitness for the Wii. As I mentioned in a previous entry, I had been contemplating taking a Zumba class for a while and this seemed like a great idea to get me acclimated to the routines and just Zumba in general.

Growing up, I always took dance classes. I started with tap dancing when I was 8, then after a few years added jazz and ballet to the mix. I danced up until the end of high school and missed it terribly afterward. Since I have that background, I know what the general idea is behind picking up new choreography and learning routines and I also knew that this was something I would enjoy because I LOVED dancing so much.

I generally like to do my Zumba in the mornings before work, because I want to do it while I’m alone. I’m not quite comfortable enough to have an audience (i.e. D), but playing the game now for a few months, I definitely wouldn’t feel weird walking into a Zumba class in the real world. I started with the beginner mode and found it pretty easy to follow along, although every now and then, one of the moves or series of moves would throw me for a loop. I’ve worked up to the “expert” workouts, and while I’m not 100% sure I should be there, I like the routines better – they’re faster, require more mental concentration to learn the moves and they get my heart rate up better.

One complaint I have about the game is that the Wii sensor doesn’t really pick up all my movements, so I’m not exactly racking up the points while I dance. Being somewhat of a perfectionist, this kind of bugs me, but I figure the more important thing is that I’m getting in a quality workout.

Even though I despise waking up at 6:30 for a workout, once I get started with Zumba, my energy starts to climb and by the end, the songs are stuck in my head and I’m in a great mood – not an easy thing for me to accomplish within several hours of waking up most days.

Overall verdict: I love it and the more I play, the more my love for Zumba grows.

I’m hoping to pick up Just Dance during Christmas and I think that will be another lovely addition to the Wii workout collection that I’m building.

  3. Like Lisa, I’ve wanted to try Zumba for over a year now. With my limitations, a class is out of the question, but doing something on the Wii might be possible. I’m thinking I may need to put that on my Christmas list! Great review.
