Ms. Marvel Project

Friday Focus

Happy Friday everyone!

This week got off to a rough start, but I’m finishing strong. Monday night, D had to take an online test for his work to get a certification and because of technical glitches, we were up almost ALL night trying to get things to work. I was quite sleep deprived the next day so I didn’t work out. But even with that small bump, I was able to work out 3 out of 5 workdays this week and will probably repeat last weekend and go to the gym both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Keeping track of my habits has really been helping me stay on track with all of my goals. We haven’t gotten takeout for dinner in 2 full weeks now, and I only ate out for lunch once in the past two weeks. In addition to saving calories, I’m also saving money, which is much needed because one of my resolutions for the year is to pay off my student loan debt. I’ve been out of college for 6.5 years now and I want these loans gone for good!

I haven’t seen any significant changes on the scale yet, and I know I’m not doing myself any favors by weighing myself everyday. At the beginning of the Ms. Marvel Project, I tried to only weigh myself once per week and do an official weigh-in on Saturday mornings, but that only lasted a week or two before I just couldn’t take it anymore. I just can’t take the suspense. I want to know exactly how I’m doing everyday. Maybe I will try to change this in the next few weeks. It’s a tough habit to break.

The good news is that even though my weight does go up and down a pound to 2 pounds every day, it is start to (ever so slightly) trend downward. Also, I’m starting to see a little bit more muscle definition in my legs, which is always the first sign that I’m doing well. My arms on the other hand… well, I don’t think I’ve ever seen muscle in there. Not ever in my life. One of the things D and I are trying to focus on when we go to the gym together is getting me to do more upper body weights and seeing what actually works for me.

I’m going to head out to do some food shopping during my lunch break here in a few minutes, then there will be a few other errands tonight and then the weekend will entail working on the apartment (we have some new furniture to set up and arrange) and working on goals.

Today is blog hopping Friday so here are the hops I joined. Check them out!

Motivation through competition

While doing my daily blog reading today, I came across something awesome: a weight loss challenge! Over the weekend, I think I really realized how out of shape I’ve gotten and got pretty fed up, and what better way to motivate me to really do this than something like this, which will keep me accountable.

10 Pound Challenge

As I mentioned on Friday, my starting weight is 146.8. If I can get to 135.8 in 12 weeks, not only would I be happy because I met the challenge, but I’d also be ecstatic because I’d be in shape.

This weekend I did go to the gym twice with D and worked out hard both times. Today, I went home during lunch and did some more Zumba Wii, which was a lot of fun as always. I’m pretty happy with how hard I’ve been working, but of course it will be some time before I see anything happen on the scale.

Stay motivated and have a happy Monday!

Getting into the holiday spirit

3 more work days until Christmas!

I’m currently with D at the dentist while he gets a bad tooth checked out, so I’m writing this post from my phone. It’s my first time attempting a phone post so I’m not sure how smoothly it will go.

As of yesterday I decided to move my blog from to, simply because commenting on other peoples blogs and getting responses back was not going as smoothly as it could have been. Also, I’m finding that wordpress has some nice options that blog didn’t (even though I know blog is powered by wordpress).

I decided to join a Monday blog hop to help get my new url out there and it’s a cool one, so you might think about joining too:

The prompt was about holiday travel and I’m happy to say that this year I am doing none! I will just be driving between a few closeby cities to visit my family and D’s.

How about you?

Made it to Friday

I decided to take a work from home day today. Life has been so hectic this entire month, and I just need a break, even a small one like this, in order to make it through to the end of the year. Don’t get me wrong, things have been fun — they just haven’t exactly been leisurely.

On Tuesday, we went to the last concert of the year, again in Boston. We had a much easier time than we did during our last trek into the city, and this time we went with D’s sister. We saw Dir en Grey (a Japanese metal band) and the Birthday Massacre. The show was excellent and we all had a great time.

Christmas shopping is officially done and I’m just waiting for one more package to arrive now and I can finish all my wrapping. I’m very happy to be done early enough and not have to do any last minute scrambling. I finished my gigantic photo book project I mentioned a few weeks ago as well. The reason it was gigantic was because it first involved scanning all the pictures I ever took when I was a kid… and just to give you an idea, the end total ended up being almost 1200 pictures scanned! I guess I really loved taking pictures back then!

As for the Ms. Marvel Project, I’ve gotten a little off track this past week and some of last. I suppose it’s only natural that this happened because of how much has been going on. I didn’t go to the gym at all this week and I’ve not been eating the best. Last week I got in 2 days of working out, so at least it wasn’t a total wash. I don’t know what next week will bring, but I’m not going to beat myself up if I can’t get in my usual 4 times to the gym during the week of Christmas. It is the holidays after all.

I hope all your weeks have wrapped up nicely and if you’re visiting from one of the Friday blog hops… hello! Please introduce yourself, and if you want, answer the Ms. Marvel Project question of the week: If you’re celebrating, how much holiday preparation do you have left?

Crazy weekend => Crazy Week

When I last posted, I was recapping my hectic weekend. Well, last weekend was nothing compared to the hectic-ness of this week. I knew it was going to be crazy, because our whole month of December is pretty booked with concerts, birthdays, holidays and getting together with friends and family.

On Tuesday, D and I went to Tori Amos in Boston. Now, before I tell you this story, I want to let you know that both he and I have lived right outside of Boston our entire lives (with the exception of the 4 years I spent in NYC during college), so you would think we’d be able to get to a landmark concert venue, right?

We started out strong. I had done some research and found a parking lot close by, had written down the lot’s address and meticulously written down additional walking details from that lot to the venue. I thought I was prepared for anything. Well, with Boston, you’re never really prepared for anything because it is one of the worst cities in the world (in my opinion) to navigate. The drive into the city was about 20-30 minutes tops, but as usual, as soon as you’re actually inside Boston, you completely stop moving. The phrase “dead stop” takes on a whole new meaning. So we sat in traffic for a little bit and eventually found the lot I had picked out.

Guess what? The guy running the lot wouldn’t let us park because he was closing at 10 and we would be there until later. What’s that about? So, off we went in search of another parking lot. Around and around we went, searching for anything that wasn’t a ridiculous hike to the Orpheum. We settled on a big parking garage we happened to find, that wasn’t too far from where we had started at the bad lot. At this point, it was about an hour after we had left the house.

So we parked, and then began the biggest dilemma of the night: how would we get there now?? Boston is not a city where you can just find things. You have to know where you’re going. We started off in one direction and had to stop in at a sandwich shop so we could use the bathrooms. And then wandered and wandered and wandered and wandered. To make matters worse (and I still don’t understand this), EVERYTHING was closed. It was only 7:30PM on a Tuesday night in the middle of downtown Boston and nothing was open. Not a CVS, not a Dunkin Donuts, NOTHING. We were desperately trying to find someone to ask for help at this point and we really should have asked at that sub shop, but we weren’t desperate enough yet when we were there. Oh, and did I mention it was pouring rain the whole time?

Somehow we managed to find a pizza place that still had some people working inside, doing their nightly cleanup before closing. They tried to shoo us out because they were officially closed, but we told them we were just looking for directions and the guy there helped us out. Thank God, because we were DONE by that point and D was actually arguing to go back and find our car to go home.

We got to the show around 8ish (we had left the house at 6) and once we were there, we had a great time. Tori put on a great show and did a lot of the songs that we loved.

So, if you’re ever in Boston, beware: the city is not kind and not logical, and that’s my 2 cents on the matter.

And today is blog hopping Friday! Here are some of the blog hops I joined today:

NaBloPoMo Reflections

It’s the last day of NaBloPoMo, and I made it! Being that I just started this blog, this was my first time attempting this challenge, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do it, so I’m pretty proud of myself that I stuck to it. Some things I learned over the course of the past month:

– Coming up with blog topics every single day is hard
– I much prefer to just ramble about my day and my thoughts rather than have a focused subject for each post
– The above is probably something I need to work ou
– Blog hops are the best, and I will continue doing them
– I’d really like to create my own blog template and domain so that I have more control over everything

I probably won’t blog tomorrow, but I know after this past month that I’m dedicated to continuing this little project I’ve started.

My favorite day of the week?

Friday is here! And that means it’s time for some more blog hops. After doing this for the past few weeks, I’ve found that joining blog hops is really fun… new readers come to my site and I get to check out a bunch more new blogs! If you’re just stopping in from one of these hops, I’d like to say hello, and welcome to the Ms. Marvel Project. My name is Lisa and I’m on a journey to get in shape and make my life a happier place.

This week I feel like I’ve been fighting off a cold or some sort of virus, but it hasn’t quite taken hold yet. I already got sick once this fall (right at the end of our Disney World trip… talk about bad timing!), so I’m not too happy about the prospect of catching yet another cold. But thankfully, Thanksgiving is only a few days away! That means a shortened work week next week and a free work from home day on Wednesday.

I have a lot to get done on my to-do list this weekend, starting tonight with some organizing and cleaning around the house, but I’m hoping it will be a fun one. D and I have a very packed December coming up with 3 or 4 concert to go to, all taking place in a matter of 2 weeks, his birthday, family get-togethers and of course the holidays themselves. It’s going to be exhausting, but fun.

For any new blog hoppers (or readers who have visited before), here’s a question for you: What was the last concert you went to and how was it? I need to get in the concert spirit! We’re seeing Tori Amos, Dir en Grey (a Japanese metal band) and As I Lay Dying at the beginning of December. I’m most looking forward to Tori.

Happy weekend!

Halfway through NabloPoMo

Today marks the halfway point of NaBloPoMo. I have to say, it’s been challenging to find something to post about everyday without descending into random ramblings. But, so far so good! I haven’t missed a day yet (knock on wood), even though things have been getting hectic with the approaching holidays and D’s car problems.

To add more insanity to the mix, D’s birthday is also coming up at the beginning of December so the buying frenzy has begun.

To update you on my progress with the Ms. Marvel Project: Yesterday I woke up early to Zumba and had tons of fun. I’m really getting the hang of expert mode and I love the songs. I’m being a lot stricter this week (as I mentioned in my weekly goals post) about snacking and other things and so far, I haven’t cheated at all (yes, I know it’s only Tuesday), though there have been temptations. I’ve been doing this for well over a month now and have seen little to no progress on the scale, so something eating-wise has to change.

Perspective from other places

After reading through my google reader this morning, I found there were several things I wanted to point you to:

1. Josephine from Secret Agent Josephine released her first published book today and it’s available for purchase! I love reading her blog entries and marvelling at the incredibly creative crafts she comes up with. If her books are anything like her blog as far as creativity is concerned (and I’m SURE they will be), I’d highly suggest you check them out if you have kids.

Here’s the official description from Amazon:
The ABCs burst brilliantly on to the page in this alphabet flash card book by blogger Secret Agent Josephine, a.k.a. Brenda Ponnay. Children will delight in the colorful illustrations and simple text.
Secret Agent Josephine’s ABC’s are an ideal introduction to the alphabet — kids will love the pictures and parents will appreciate the thoughtful details and eye-catching illustrations.

Check out her book here:

2. While so many of us are thinking about weight loss and getting in shape, two amazing bloggers posted this morning with a different perspective on the whole concept:

Susan from the Great Balancing Act wrote a heartfelt and thought provoking piece on her perspective on weight after facing serious illness

– And Twenty Somethings also had a great piece on body image and perception that really made me think

Check out these posts if you have some time – they’re worth the read!

It’s blog hopping Friday

It seems like Friday is always a great day to join blog hops, so today I’ve joined the ones linked below. If you’re just arriving from one of these blog hops, hello! Please introduce yourself in the comments and if you’d like, answer this question: What are you most looking forward to about the holiday season and what are you most dreading?

For me, I look forward to the family get-togethers since I don’t get to see my extended family very much outside of the holidays. We all catch up on each other’s lives and eat tons and tons of FOOD (another huge plus to the holiday season). Whenever we have a holiday party with the family, there is an obscene amount of food present starting the moment you walk in the door: cheese, pepperoni, crackers, stuffed artichokes, lasagna, meat pies, dips, olives, nuts, you name it, it’s probably there… and that’s all before the main course is served!

The thing I’m most dreading is the insanity of shopping and driving during this time of year. It seems that everyone and their mother comes out of the woodwork and fills up every parking lot before you can blink. Hopefully I will be able to do the majority of my shopping online.

Thanks for coming by!
